Print Night

A couple of years ago I stumbled upon a new group that was going to meet monthly to review each other’s photo prints. I have attended nearly every meeting since the first and have been profoundly helped by the group. I wrote up a little article about Print Night in preparation for our upcoming show this September in the Shasta County Arts Council’s gallery in the old Redding City Hall.
The North State Photography Association is about artists helping artists. We hold monthly meetings called “Print Night” to review each other’s printed photo art. Initiated in 2009, we usually number a dozen or so at our meetings. We try to avoid discussion of camera, printer, photo gear or technique. We just deal with the aesthetics of the final product of our endeavors – the finished photographic print.
We have all been enriched by the mutually supportive attitude and enthusiastic acceptance of each other’s unique lenses through which we each view our worlds and project our expressions. One might call us an artists’ improvement community. Certainly we are improving our talents and expanding our understandings, while deepening our appreciation of each member’s artistic styles. In doing so, we are helping each other while improving ourselves.
More importantly, we are learning what it is like to see an image through the eyes of other artists. This is a deeper level of improvement with a broadening effect. A benefit that some of us didn’t anticipate would result from our warm and informal gatherings.
How rare it is in today’s tumultuous world to enjoy a gathering dedicated solely to the appreciation and expression of beauty. Rarer still do we have the opportunity to be helped in our artistic endeavors by such an accomplished group of photo artists.
The prints we bring to our meetings are often ‘works in progress’ on which we might seek guidance. Others might be fully formed and ready for gallery life. At any given meeting one might see still life, floral, landscape, portraits – even the occasional abstract.
Most of us use digital equipment in our captures and prints though some of us are committed to the silver halide persuasion, developing our negatives and prints in our unlit and inkless vaults.
Newcomers are warmly welcomed and much appreciated. Sometimes attendees don’t bring prints but instead, enjoy the review process while contributing their opinions on the works presented.
There is another level of the review process that is more subtle than paper, ink, composition, or form. It is the glue that brings the group together month after month. That binding element is the quiet appreciation that the desire to express beauty in whatever form – a cliff, a flower, lake or stone – is itself beautiful. This collective desire to express beauty more completely is the organizing principal of Print Night.
Picasso once said “Art is the lie that reveals the truth.” One could say that those of us who participate in Print Night are all liars – liars that are continually trying to unveil truth – in our photographic prints.
